Celebrating 125 Years of Pompey: A Remarkable Journey Through Time

Steve on this book for every Pompey Fan

Colin Farmery, the editor of “The Official History Portsmouth Football Club Celebrating 125 Years,” paid us a visit in September. He came to deliver my complimentary copy of this remarkable book. Weighing in at an impressive 6 pounds, measuring 14″x10″ with a whopping 420 pages, it’s more than just a book. It’s a treasure trove of memories, triumphs, and cherished moments for all Pompey fans.

A Personal Connection:

Before delving into the details of this extraordinary book, it’s important to mention our personal connection to the club. For 24 years of my career, I worked in the newspaper industry in Portsmouth, for Streetlife and later The News. During that time, I photographed the team’s rise from the old second division to the heights of the Premier League. Highlights included the championship-winning season in 2002/03 and the unforgettable FA Cup Final victory in 2008. I was even a finalist for the UK Sport Photographer of the Year in 1996 and 1998. I also headed a ball lobbed at me by Oasis’s Noel Gallagher in the tunnel at Maine Road!

125 Years of Pompey Unveiled:

Now, let’s talk about the book itself. This is a labor of love that truly encapsulates the club’s rich history. Divided into two halves, it offers a comprehensive journey through time.

This book is a captivating narrative that charts the club’s journey since its founding in 1898. From its early development in the early twentieth century painting a vivid picture of the club to the present day. Readers encounter remarkable individuals who have played a part in Pompey’s 125 year history. It’s a fascinating journey that introduces us to historical figures like Ray Hiron, double English league champion Len Phillips. Then there’s my personal favourite, Alan Biley.

Stories and Photographs That Resonate:

What truly sets this book apart are the stories and photographs that bring Pompey’s history to life. I thought they knew a fair bit about the club but discovered so many new tales and revelations. The sheer number and quality of photographs in the book are astounding. Unearthing some of the older, unseen pictures is commendable, and enhances the historical narrative.

One aspect that stands out is the remarkable colorization and enhancement of certain images. These techniques breathe new life into old photographs, making them even more evocative and visually striking.

A Personal Pride:

It’s great to see the photographers who have coved the club acknowleged. Murray Sanders who proceeded me at The News and Jo Peppler are both mentioned. I’m appreciative that Colin Farmery acknowledged our contributions in his introduction and credited us in several bylines.

A Must-Have for Pompey Fans:

Whether you’re a devoted Pompey fan or you know someone who bleeds blue, this is a must-have book. It’s a journey through time, a testament to the passion and dedication of fans and players alike. A beautifully crafted tribute to 125 years of Portsmouth Football Club. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s true celebration of the club’s enduring legacy, and I’m proud to be a small part of its remarkable history.
