What to Wear at a Family Photoshoot?
Sometimes one of the things that stops you booking a Family Photoshoot is “What are we going to wear?’. Truthfully it doesn’t matter to us, it’s all about you and your family so you choose if you want a formal style, a more casual look or you want to show your style. We’ve had suits, shorts, cos-play, steam punk and T-shirts with jeans. Your family photoshoot is a chance to capture the love, joy, and connection you share with your loved ones.
We want to ensure you feel your absolute best in front of the camera – and that means you have to be comfortable.
While there is no right or wrong choice, we’ve put together some simple suggestions to help you prepare for your family photoshoot.
1. Keep It Natural
We want to photograph the real you, so choose outfits that reflect your personality and style. Avoid anything that feels too forced or unnatural. Simple, comfortable clothing that makes you feel confident will always result in the best images.
2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone having to wear the exact same outfit. You can opt for a coordinated look with complementary colours. Choose a colour palette of 2-3 shades and mix them throughout the family’s outfits. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, or pastel shades work well for a timeless feel, while bold colours can add a fun and energetic touch. Dark colours often create a more formal look.
3. Keep It Timeless
Your family photos will be cherished for years to come, so we strongly suggest steering away from large logos and busy patterns, as they can draw attention away from the faces and expressions of those participating. Solid colours or subtle patterns often photograph beautifully and allow the focus to stay on your family.
4. Dress for Comfort
A photoshoot should be fun and relaxed, and feeling comfortable in what you’re wearing makes a huge difference. If your child dislikes a certain outfit or fabric, it will show in the photos. Choose clothing that fits well and allows everyone to move freely—especially for little ones who love to be active!
5. Add Personal Touches
Accessories can be a great way to add personality to your photos. A statement necklace, a stylish hat, or a cute bow in your child’s hair can enhance your overall look. Just be careful not to overdo it—less is often more when it comes to accessories.
6. Plan Ahead
Don’t leave outfit decisions to the last minute!
7. Bring a Backup for Kids
If you’re bringing young children, it’s always a good idea to have an extra outfit on hand—just in case of spills or unexpected accidents. Or get them changed once you are here, if you’re children are anything like my boy then they can’t stay clean for 5 minutes.
